Tsukiji Travel Guide

Tsukiji, located in Tokyo's Chuo Ward, is an area adjacent to Ginza. The area sits on reclaimed land, which the name "Tsukiji (reclaimed land)" comes from. The name was used since 1657 when the Great Fire of Meireki occurred. Most of Edo had been burnt down and people needed more land. The Honganji temple, formerly built in Asakusa, was destroyed by the same fire and relocated to Tsukiji. Tsukiji Market, which was built in 1935 is the largest market in Japan, where transactions in wholesale, middle trade and retail business take place. Tuna fish brought from remote fishing areas are auctioned inside the wholesale area on weekdays in early morning, a practice which has attracted many tourists. There are hundreds of fish venders, fruit/vegetable shops and restaurants clustered in this small space, which is only a few minute walk from Ginza.
