Tokyo station serves as the central station of Japan. All trains bound for Tokyo are shown on the official timetable as "Up" trains, and trains that leave Tokyo are shown as "Down" trains. The station is a hub and terminus, and more than 3000 trains stop, arrive and depart daily. The station building, a red brick construction, was originally built in 1914 and sits on the Marunouchi side, the west exit of the station. The building is designated as an important cultural treasure and is now undergoing renovation. It will open partially as a hotel in 2012. The Imperial palace, head offices of major banks and blue chip companies are located in the Marunouchi district. With the increase of high rise buildings replacing old office buildings, the district is changing into a commercial area with restaurants and shops. The station's east entrance Yaesu is home to a department store and an underground shopping center. The Yaesu entrance connects to Kyobashi and Nihonbashi districts which are centers of commerce and finance activity in Tokyo.
Tokyo's historical building inaugurated its re-opening in 2002 as one of new notable sites of Tokyo at Marunouchi, central Tokyo. The building accommodates various refined shops and stores, restaurants with great individuality and modernized business offices.
