Japan is a country in east Asia, an archipelago which situates in the Pacific Ocean. In size, it is the 62th largest in the world, with land surface of 37800 square kilometers. Surrounded by ocean waters, Japan is a maritime country. Geographically, the land is divided into 8 regions - Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu. Administratively, the state of Japan consists of 47 local governments - 1 To, 1 Do, 2 Fu, and 43 Prefectures.
