Widely known as a relaxing hangout with a rich swath of green, Yoyogi Koen (Yoyogi Park) is the fourth largest park in Tokyo's 23 wards. Together with the adjacent Meiji Shrine, the park forms a large forested space, with ginko trees flaunting their intensely yellow leaves in autumn.
The park property is divided into two sections; the north featuring large lawns and ponds, and the south with an athletic stadium.
After World War II, U.S. military officers and their families were stationed at this site until 1964 when it was handed back to Japan and turned into the main athletes' village for the Tokyo Olympics. It became a city park in 1967 and, in 1990, a big lake with three fountains was built to add another charm to the park.
