Owakudani, which literally means "Great Boiling Valley", has achieved a wide reputation as a scenic spot. At this volcanic valley, estimated at around 400,000 years old, visitors can enjoy the majestic scenery of Mt.Fuji combined with active sulphur vents and volcanic hot springs unceasingly generating numerous plumes of scalding steam.
Sulphuric water from these hot springs accounts for the black shells of hard-boiled eggs "Kuro-tamago", a local specialty known for its strong smell. Eating one of these eggs is said to prolong your lifespan by seven years.
Another recommended attraction is "Enmei Jizo-son" stone statues that are worshiped as divinities of longevity. Legend says that these statues date back to more than 1,000 years ago, when the highly revered Buddhist monk Kukai visited the area. Shocked by the bleak, hellish scenery of the valley, he sculpted a Jizo statue in hopes of saving those suffering under volcanic disasters.
