Odawara Castle (Odawarajo)

Odawara Castle is a historic landmark situated in the city of Odawara, Kanagawa prefecture. Since 1495 the castle had been the family residence of the feudal lord Hojo, until it was taken over by the Okubo clan in the Edo period. It remained an iconic feature of the city for more than 200 years, but was demolished at the order of Emperor Meiji in 1870. The present castle is a ferro-concrete reproduction built in May 1960.

The castle tower exhibits old documents, paintings, armor suits, swords, and other historical materials. The top of the castle keep, approximately 60 meters high, commands a spectacular view of Sagami Bay and even of the Boso Peninsula, if the weather cooperates.
