Evoking memories of the gardens in the Musashino area's past, the Jindai Botanical Park is a place where the beauty of trees, grasses, plants, and flowers can be enjoyed throughout the year. Previously the site of the nursery for Tokyo's roadside trees, it was opened as Jindai Ryokuchi after World War 2, and then subsequently renamed Jindai Botanical Park and re-opened as the sole botanical park in the Tokyo Metropolitan area. Currently, there are 100 thousand trees and plants consisting of approximately 4,500 varieties. There are 30 blocks organized by plant species including a rose garden, azalea garden, plum tree garden, and Japanese clover garden. These were created so that along with taking in the spectacular view, visitors could also learn various information regarding the particular species. By preserving the plant species of old Edo gardens and offering gardening and horticulture events and exhibitions to the general public, the park plays an important role in cultivating interest in greenery to the citizens of Tokyo. In 1984, a giant greenhouse was completed, and the brilliantly colored blossoms of the rare tropical plants that are gathered within can be enjoyed throughout the winter.
