Opened in 1946 and located at the mouth of the Sumida River, Hamarikyu Onshi Teien (Hamarikyu Gardens) is a public park with gardens built on a site which used to be a feudal lord's villa. The park is designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Special Historic Site.
There are two distinct areas in the garden; the southern part containing a classic Japanese garden and the northern area bearing western influences.
The tidal pond, infused with seawater and habitat for fish and crabs, is perhaps the most prominent aspect of the gardens. "Shioiri no Ike", as the tidal pond is called in Japanese, was once a common feature found in Japanese gardens, but can only be seen here today.
This is a perfect destination to unwind as you amble along the lawn and enjoy the contrast of the gardens and the futuristic skyscrapers in the backdrop.
