This museum was inaugurated in 2003 on the 81st birthday of the manga artist Shigeru Mizuki, best known for the horror manga series GeGeGe no Kitaro. The museum stands at the end of "Mizuki Shigeru Road" in Tottori prefecture, and attracts 1.7 million visitors annually.
On display is a collection of chronologically placed graphic materials that follow the life and work of the artist. In addition, you can listen to Mizuki-sensei as he shares his life and artwork on the monitor.
Scattered on the museum premises are detailed statues of Yokai (monsters out of Japanese folklore) adding to the whole building the spooky flavor peculiar to the world of Mizuki. The museum also exhibits a huge collection of weird goods he collected while traveling around the globe.
The facility underwent its first wholesale renewal in June 2008, and turned into an attraction spot tailored to the needs of fans of all ages. Voice guidance is available in English, Chinese, Korean and Russian.
